The Welch MFA initiative is a prime example of “real world” engagement that positions third-year MFA graduate students to activate their artwork before a seasoned audience, establish art world contacts, exhibition potential, gallery representation and connect with collectors that may yield in art acquisitions.  From the backend, the MFA candidates are folded into in the six-month process early on with weekly meetings, studio visits, travel and transportation logistics, art handling, inventory and on-site coordination, as well as collaborating with the art historians, etc.  More important, the Aqua experience immerses the MFA students’ art within a creative context at the largest concentration of international art fairs in America.  In between manning the suite, the graduates are encouraged to explore the world-class contemporary art and trends at the neighboring art fairs such as the anchor fair Art Basel Miami, NADA, Untitled, as well as the private collections like the Rubell and Margulies collections.

The 2015 Aqua Art Miami selection committee is headed by the fair’s new director, Katelijne De Backer — a major player in the art world circuit, who directed major art events including The Armory Show.  According to De Backer, “Aqua is a little jewel of Miami Art Week—it provides exposure to the undiscovered works of young artists and galleries, which is a crucial aim of the fair and something that I personally love to support.”

The Welch team that’s leading the charge Aqua Art Miami includes Joseph Peragine (Associate Professor), Craig Drennen (Graduate Director/Associate Professor), Tim Flowers (Senior Lecturer) and Tony Mangle (Marketing/Public Relations).
