The Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design at Georgia State University is pleased to announce its MFA Exhibition for the 14thannual Aqua Art Miami fair in December. Aqua Art Miami will kick off its 14th edition at the Aqua Hotel (1530 Collins Avenue Miami Beach, FL 33139) with a VIP Preview on Wednesday, December 5, before opening to the public December 6 – 9. The fair calls itself “the premier location for art aficionados to procure works by young, emerging, and mid-career artists…consistent to its signature relaxed yet energetic vibe.” This year, 52 international exhibitors and 135 artists from 15 countries will be participating in the Art Miami sister fair. This is the eighth consecutive year for our school––the only academic institution participating––to showcase an extraordinary breadth of work.

Because the selection process favors nominations instead of a curatorial theme, 3rd-year MFA candidates are given the freedom to create work that best portrays their practice, which implements thesis research and material experimentation. Aqua provides the artists with an opportunity to garner attention and receive feedback on new work from an international audience.

The work on view in the Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design show is multi-media, with artist representing the disciplines of Sculpture, Painting, Drawing, Textiles, Ceramics, Printmaking, and Photography. This year, work will also incorporate methods and mediums such as sound, video, light, 3-d printed material, and performance. The artists, all in their final year of the Georgia State MFA program, have exhibited their work both nationally and internationally.  The topics the exhibiting artists address span from contemporary social issues to human and material connection.

The Aqua program will be documented with an exhibition catalog designed by MFA graphic designer Ana Coello and will feature a guest essay by Atlanta Artist Fahamu Pecou.  This year is the first year the Welch School with have artist represented in the “Special Projects” public installation portion of the fair—Shanequa Gay and Aaron Artrip will both have pieces in the main courtyard as a part of this highly-selective, juried showcase.

This year’s participating artists include: Shanequa Gay, Aaron Artrip, Travis Lindquist, Ana Carolina Meza Mendoza, Nathanial Dean Mondragon, Jessica Caldas, Maria Ojeda, Carla Powell, Mohammad Javad Jahangir, Andrew Adamson, and Amin Ghasemi.
