On September 29, the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design welcomes members from the Liu Shiming Art Foundation and family with a reception to celebrate the establishment of a new graduate scholarship and the exhibition "Cutting Through Mountains to Bring Water: The Sculptures of Liu Shiming." The school and family are marking the beginning of this relationship with a retrospective of the late, Chinese artist Liu Shiming.
Liu Shiming (1926 - 2010) was a member of Central Academy of Fine Art's first generation of Chinese sculptors. He grounded his work in a Chinese local context, developing a folk art style within the Chinese tradition through ancient modeling methods. In 2018, the Central Academy of Fine Arts established the Liu Shiming Sculpture Museum, which is dedicated to researching and investigating Liu’s artworks and their art historical meaning.
The Liu Shiming Art Foundation has generously donated to the development of the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design sculpture, ceramics, and textiles programs at Georgia State University with a new scholarship that supports graduate students in the medium.
The exhibition, "Cutting Through Mountains to Bring Water: The Sculptures of Liu Shiming" is open through October 1. The reception on Thursday, September 29 coincides with Atlanta Art Week.
