The Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design is proud to present our upcoming group show. Featuring work by sculpture alumni and friends through the decades, the exhibition will present a dynamic range of techniques, media, and content. In addition to exploring the technical mastery of iron casting, the selected works will reflect the lasting impact of studying sculpture at GSU and the creative legacy formed in our Edgewood Studio. The tone of the show is celebratory, inviting artists to reflect on their time in Atlanta’s vibrant sculpture community. This event honors the tradition of iron casting while looking forward to the future of the craft. The show will have two parts: “Reverberations” (three-dimensional pieces) and “Lasting Traces” (photographs of large-scale and public works).
A closing reception for the exhibition will be held Friday, December 6, 2024, from 5:00-8:00pm.
Participating artists include Clark Ashton, Emily Baker, George Beasley, Page Burch, Susan A. Cipcic, Erin Cunningham, Antonio Darden, Martin Dawe, Blaise Dell, Kyle Dillehay, David Landi, Marjee Levine, Tony Loadholt, Morgan Lugo, Michael Murrell, Hanna Newman, Judy Parady, Curtis Patterson, Allen Peterson, Frank Poor, Vaughn Randall, Maria Sarmiento, Phoenix Savage, Corrina Sephora, Ruth Stanford, Kelly Thames, Matt Toole, James Vanderpool, Irvin Wheeler, and Robert Witherspoon.
The exhibition is juried by Poppy Woodeson. Woodeson (formerly Ben Woodeson) is a critically acclaimed artist and curator. She studied at Glasgow School of Art. In 1995, she undertook an academic exchange to study sculpture under George Beasley at Georgia State University in Atlanta; an experience that she has described as “life changing”. Shows previously curated by Poppy include Morphisisation (APT Gallery, London), Solid Gone (Sordoni Gallery, Wilkes-Barre, PA) and Once Upon an Instant (HTW, Berlin) and her work has been extensively exhibited throughout Europe and North America. In 2021 after a lifetime of gender confusion, “Ben” came out as trans and took the name Poppy. She now lives happily with her girlfriend and a slightly unfriendly cat in Brighton, England. The juror will talk at 6:00pm.
