Matthew Sugarman

Matthew Lamoureux Sugarman joined the School of Art and Design faculty in 1998. As an Assistant Professor of Art within the Drawing Painting and Printmaking Program he is responsible for coordinating the printmaking area. Sugarman began his career as a West Coast artist. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Cinematography from San Francisco State University, a Master of Arts Degree in Drawing and Printmaking from Humboldt State University, California and a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Printmaking from Montana State University, Bozeman. In 1984 Sugarman served as a Master Printer at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts and Humanities, Idaho. From 1985 through 1987 he was on the faculty of Anchorage Community College and Director of the Printmaking Department for the Visual Arts Center of Alaska. His background also includes teaching Papermaking at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1995, and teaching monoprinting courses at the City College of San Francisco in 1998. From the fall of 1987 until the spring of 1997, Mr. Sugarman served as an Associate Professor of Art at the University of Northern Iowa.

Sugarman has an active exhibition schedule. He has a record of nineteen solo art exhibitions, the most recent being “Veneer”, Eyedrum Gallery, Atlanta, Georgia, 1999. Sugarman has received over twenty awards for his work in printmaking and drawing. These include a purchase award in the Los Angeles Printmaking Society’s twelfth National Exhibition, a second place among 2,068 entries in the Greater Midwest International, and an award of excellence and two purchase awards for the North Shore Art League Midwest Print Show. Also notable was his inclusion in the highly competitive Third, Fourth and Fifth ROC International Biennial Print Exhibitions, Taiwan. In 1999 he exhibited in the MCNeese National Works on Paper Exhibition, Shearman Fine Arts Center, Lake Charles, Louisiana; the National Drawing and Print Competitive Exhibition, Gromley Gallery, College of Notre Dame, Maryland; Switch, (An audio and visual situation), Eyedrum Gallery, Atlanta, GA; Columbus Museum Regional Juried Exhibition, Columbus, GA. Matthew Lamoureux Sugarman’s current artwork stresses the use of 2D printmaking and mixed media techniques in the creation of artworks, which evoke the visual environment of interior mental space. In addition to having presented more than twenty solo art exhibitions, He has received over twenty awards for his artwork. Most notable among the many public art collections which feature his work, are the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC and the Beijing Natural Culture Center in the Peoples Republic of China.

Sugarman was appointed to direct the printmaking area at Georgia State University, Atlanta in 1987 and continues to serve in that capacity today as Professor. He received a Master of Arts Degree in Drawing and Printmaking from Humboldt State University, California and a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Printmaking from Montana State University, Bozeman. From 1985 through 1987 Sugarman was Director of the Printmaking Department for the Visual Arts Center of Alaska. From the fall of 1987 until the spring of 1997, Sugarman served as an Associate Professor of Art at the University of Northern Iowa.
