Emeritus- Biography
Hubert Stanley Anderson graduated with a BVA in Painting & Drawing from GSU in 1976. Anderson pursed his MFA in Painting & Drawing at Miami University, Oxford, OH (1978) with a GTA in their esteemed program giving him the opportunity to begin teaching early on in his academic life. Anderson also worked as a gallery assistant at The Contemporary Museum in Cincinnati, Ohio (1978.)
In late 1979, Anderson returned to Atlanta and began teaching at GSU as Adjunct Professor in the Foundations department under the leadership of Chair Joseph Perrin. Courses included figure drawing, drawing I/II, Color Theory, Illustration, and 2D. In June 1980 Anderson was hired by CNN as one of the six original graphic designers/video journalist hired for the launch of the first ever 24-hour cable broadcasting network engineered by media mogul Ted Turner. Later Anderson moved to NYC to work for NBC News as a broadcast designer (1981) when he recruited by CNN to return to Atlanta to serve as Assistant Art Director for the launch of CNN2 (Headline News Network.)
In 1987, Anderson was appointed as Assistant Professor in Graphic Design at GSU (1987-1992.) It was also during this tenure at GSU that Anderson continued to work part-time at CNN HLN; He also began working as a freelance concept sketch artist with numerous theatrical, Broadway and television clients. Anderson served as concept sketch artist/designer for Twentieth Century Fox Films (1990-1992), New Line Cinema (1995), TNT (1992-1995), GEM NYC (1990-1994), Poetic Justice Studio, LA (1992-1993), Aspect Ratio Studio, LA (1992). Anderson is responsible for designing over 120+ theatrical release posters, Broadway shows, network and cable television films. His collateral print, storyboards, and original concept sketches include "Edward Scissorhands", "Home Alone”,, "For the Boys", "Batman: The Return", "Soapdish", "Memoirs of an Invisible Man", "My Life in the Theatre", "Cool World", "Singles", "Andersonville" and countless other cinematic visuals are a witness to his passion for design and creativity.
In 1992, Anderson once again returned to CNN and was given the title of Director of Broadcast Design for CNN HLN (1992-2001) where he remained until the relaunch of CNN Headline News in August 2001. Anderson’s leadership was managing a creative staff of 20 artists including internship programs, recruiting, annual budgets, and overseeing all on-air production and set design for the network. He was also in charge of Art Direction for CNN Airport Network, CNN Newsource, McDTV, CheckOut Channel, Better Health Network, Cafe USA, and the University & College Network.
In 2001, Anderson once again returned to teaching fulltime at Georgia State University as Associate Professor, where he served as Coordinator of the Graphic Design department and Director of Graduate Studies within the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design. Anderson has received numerous media design awards from the Broadcast Designers Association (BDA); an Emmy from The National Academy of Arts and Sciences (NATAS); served on the Awards Committee and Education Committee for the BDA/Promax; served as a judge for numerous Blue Ribbon Committees for the NATAS (National Academy of Arts & Sciences) Daytime Emmy awards. Anderson was the recipient of the 2011-2012 Outstanding Teaching Award given by the College of Arts & Sciences that celebrates outstanding teaching achievements in academia.
In August 2016 Anderson retired from GSU and was asked to join the faculty at Young Harris College in order to create a new Graphic Design BA program for the college and was shortly promoted to full Professor (2018) where he remained until 2021. In 2020, Anderson was awarded the Faculty of the Year award from Young Harris College. Currently, Anderson serves as Adjunct Professor at GSU teaching classes in Graphic Design and Drawing while also working in his studio as a fine artist and freelance designer for clients such as Netflix, Prime Cable and Hulu.
